Down Knives, Up Gloves (DK) aims to reduce knife and youth violence in Nottingham through sports, fitness and mentoring for 16-25 year olds with a focus on BAME young people.
The project has two complementary strands:
DK is running three sessions for 10 weeks working with a cohort of up to 30 young people. Each session lasts for two hours, with the first hour focusing on mentoring support, employability, coaching, applying for jobs and apprenticeships. The second hour is boxing and fitness. Attendees are required to complete and attend both sessions over 10 weeks.
The second strand is a mobile ring that will be taken to 20 events over the year. The idea is to reach out to and engage young people in wider communities.
The project is run by Down Knives Up Glove’s in house team who between them have many years’ experience of coaching, mentoring, and mental health work.
Due to Covid-19 there will be a delay in starting the program. The 10 week mentoring programme is a face to face programme which cannot start until current restrictions are lifted.
